RAY STEVENSON

Ray Stevenson, born in 1964 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, moved to England for his education, where he cultivated his passion for acting.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ray was best known for his commanding performances in both television and cinema, most notably as Titus Pullo in the acclaimed series "Rome" and as Volstagg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s "Thor" series.

His most recent roles included a significant appearance in the "Star Wars" spin-off series "Ahsoka," where he portrayed the formidable Baylan Skoll. This role, as his final acting work, showcased his enduring talent and presence. Stevenson’s career also featured a pivotal role in the historical drama "1242: Gateway to the West," which was his last film project before his untimely passing in 2023.

Ray chose Ibiza as his chosen sanctuary, drawn to its vibrant art scene and the serene beauty of its landscapes. It was here he dreamed of creating a festival to celebrate the transformative power of art—encompassing film, television, web, and all forms of creative expression. His love for Ibiza and its community was profound, influencing his life and work profoundly.

Honoring Ray, the Ray of Light Awards embrace his vision. The awards are a celebration of those who, like Ray, inspire and challenge through their artistic endeavors. These awards honor his legacy and the narratives that connect humanity, foster understanding, and enrich lives globally.

In MEMORY OF RAY

On the 1st anniversary of the ceremony of Ray’s passing, friends of Ray from all around the world gathered in Ibiza to celebrate the memory of Ray.

After Ray's passing, many of his friends and fellow actors shared beautiful memories and personal stories about Ray. Here are some.

Grateful for you always Ray. Thank you for deepening and enriching every moment. You will forever inspire.
— Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano - Star Wars Ahsoka)
We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear friend Ray Stevenson. Ray was an incredible combination of talent, warmth, humor, and heart,” it read. “His ability to play a villain, while being such a kind and caring person in reality, is a testament to his incredible talent.
— Star Wars (official website)
Ray Stevenson ”wanted to do something very special” for his lightsaber. He had his own request and ”wanted to change the pommel.” “Ray wanted to do something very special for this. We changed the pommel and were able to implement a creative choice that Ray had. And for me now, this makes this a very, very special saber. Because not only does it have Dave Filoni’s influence, Doug Chiang’s influence, and my influence, it also has a creative influence from Ray himself. So it’s very special to me.
— Josh Roth (Ahsoka’s prop master)
To Ray, our ‘Poetry in Motion’, May we always be reminded of you when we look to the stars.
— Diana Lee Inosanto (Morgan Elsbeth - Star Wars Ahsoka)
Baylan was one of Stevenson’s last roles before his death and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most outstanding performances of his career. Stevenson brings a reserved yet assertive attitude that allows the character to dominate every scene, but he isn’t afraid to unleash his fury when the action calls for it. His acting elevates Baylan to another level and cements his place as the best of the Ahsoka show cast and characters. Baylan’s characteristics distinguish him as an incredible onscreen presence and the shining example of a perfect Star Wars villain.

We’re in a wait-and-see pattern at this point. But I’m glad the conversation is about Ray and how great he was…. I used to have mini debates with him and say, ‘Ray, you’re the villain here.’ And he’d be like, ‘I don’t think so.’ I was like, ‘I know you don’t think so, but you are. I love that you’re playing it like you’re not.’ Which is exactly the way Baylan thinks,” Ray “would’ve been over the moon” to see fans’ reception of his imposing and complicated character.
The big regret here is that he didn’t get to experience that. I’m glad he was at Star Wars Celebration with us, that he got to see the trailer and get a taste of that from the fans. And they’ve been nothing but wonderful about Ray and the character.
— David Filoni (CCO Lucasfilm)
